With a portfolio of small business loan guarantees and disaster loans worth more than $45 billion, the U.S. Government's Small Business Administration is the nation's largest single financial provider for small businesses.

In addition to 7(a) and 504 small business loan programs, the Small Business Administration (SBA) also offers the MicroLoan Program for small start-up businesses. Since it began, the program has provided $88.7 million in small business loans, with women entrepreneurs receiving more than 41% of that amount.

Under the Small Business Loan Pre-qualification Program, launched in 1994, women have received more than $117 million worth of small business loans.

In 1999, the Small Business Investment Company Program invested $55 million in women-owned small businesses. The program also licensed 3 women-managed venture capital companies in 1998, the first to base their investment strategies on helping women-owned companies. So far, the 3 companies have invested in almost 30 women-owned or women-managed businesses.

In the past five fiscal years, SBA-guaranteed loans to women have tripled in number and increased in dollar value by 164%.

In the same five-year period, SBA has backed more than 48,000 loans to women-owned businesses valued at nearly $7 billion.

SBA has developed new loan programs to better meet the needs of women customers, including reduced administrative paperwork and "microloans" for amounts between $100 and $25,000.
